E. J. “Ned” Holland, Jr. is Senior Vice President, Human Resources and Communications for EMBARQ. This NYSE-listed company has approximately 15,000 employees and operates in 18 states offering voice, data, high speed internet, wireless and entertainment services to over 5 million customers. In his position, he is responsible for human resources and communications functions at EMBARQ. These groups include employee and labor relations, talent management, compensation and benefits, employee experience, corporate security, internal and external communications, the Intranet and Multimedia Communications center and the events management team.
Prior to joining EMBARQ, Mr. Holland was Vice President, compensation, benefits, labor and employee relations for Sprint, the Kansas City based global communications company. He held that position from May 2000 – August 2005 (When the transition to Embarq Corporation began.). In that capacity he was responsible for compensation programs, major corporate benefits, as well as labor and employee relations on an enterprise wide basis. This included responsibility for the Company’s short and long-term compensation programs, including stock option programs; retirement and welfare benefits, including purchasing health care for the Company’s 60,000 employees and 18,000 retirees nationwide; relations with the international unions that represent a portion of the Company’s employees; as well as general employee relations policies. Prior to that position, he was Assistant Vice President—Corporate Benefits since February 1999.
Prior to joining Sprint, Mr. Holland was Senior Vice President, Chief Administrative Officer and Corporate Secretary for Payless Cashways, Inc., the Kansas City based building materials retailer. At Payless he was responsible for the Company’s human resources, corporate communications, community relations, legal affairs, corporate governance and internal administration.
Prior to joining Payless, Mr. Holland had been a managing partner and co-chairman of the health law practice group of the Kansas City law firm of Spencer Fane Britt & Browne. Educated at Rockhurst College and Boston College Law School, he joined the law firm in 1968 and spent almost 24 years representing employers and particularly health care providers in labor and employee relations matters.
He is past Chairman of the Boards of Truman Medical Center, the Kansas City Area Hospital Association, and the Mid-America Coalition on Health Care. He recently served on the board of the National Business Group on Health and co-chaired that group’s National Committee on Evidence Based Benefit Design. He currently serves on the Boards of the Kansas Health Policy Authority, Joint Commission Resources, and Mid-America Coalition on Health Care and is on the steering committee for the Health Care committee of the HR Policy Association.
